THE IMPORTANCE OF A CHILD’S ROOTS

Citlali* and Kabil* are the parents to Nicte*. Nicte is a 17 year old boy from the Rarámuri indigenous group located in Chihuahua State in Mexico.


Nicte was detained three years ago and placed in the Chihuahua City Detention Center. He does not speak Spanish. He is part of a large, but historically pushed aside, indigenous group. Their beliefs and way of life sometimes conflict with the lifestyle and beliefs from the “chabochis,” the term Rarámuris use for those outside their tribe.

REDUCING TIME TO TRIAL TASK FORCE

On October 14, we held the first Case Speeding Task Force alongside the newly appointed Magistrate of the Court for Juvenile Offenders of the State of Durango: Mr. Álvaro Rodríguez Alcalá. Other juvenile justice system’s specialized workers were present during this meeting, such as Judges, personnel from the Transparency unit of the government, administrative secretaries, as well as Public Ministries and defense attorneys.

DIRECTORATE FOR THE EXECUTION OF SENTENCES RECEIVES DONATIONS

In the month of October we made another donation of material to the General Directorate for the Execution of Sentences in the State of Durango.

DETECTING NEEDS AT THE CERTMI DETENTION CENTER

On October 26, we visited the CERTMI’s detention center facilities in the State of Durango to carry out a workshop directed by Psy.D. Melissa Hernandez, that will allow for the detection of specific needs of incarcerated children.
